Common Questions
Everything you need to know about cycling the paintswalaėda Castle Moat and Harbour Canal routes
Absolutely. Both the Castle Moat and Harbour Canal routes are designed with a relaxed pace in mind, featuring mostly flat terrain and well-maintained paths. You can take as many stops as you'd like to rest, take photos, or simply enjoy the views—there's no pressure to keep up with anyone else.
The Castle Moat Loop is roughly 8–10 km and takes most riders 2–3 hours with a comfortable pace and stops. The Harbour Canal route is slightly shorter at about 6–7 km and can be done in 1.5–2 hours. Both are designed so you're never rushing.
Most of both routes use dedicated cycling paths and paved towpaths. You'll find asphalt, some compact gravel, and the occasional cobbled section in the old town. We recommend a hybrid or touring bike with wider tyres for comfort, though a standard road bike works fine on the main sections.
Paintswalaėda has several bike rental shops near the old town that offer daily rentals. We can point you to reliable operators when you book. If you prefer to bring your own bike, that's fine too—just plan for transport to paintswalaėda.
May through September offers the warmest, driest conditions. Spring and autumn can be beautiful too, though you'll want waterproof layers. Winter cycling is possible but paths may be icy, so we generally recommend the warmer months if you prefer a more comfortable ride.
Yes. Both routes pass cafés, small restaurants, and public benches where you can stop. The old town around the Castle Moat has plenty of options, and the Harbour area has waterfront spots perfect for a coffee break. We always include rest point suggestions in our route notes.
